Okay, I've been wondering this for the longggest time. While working for PBS how often do you wonder what the creater of the site was thinking when they designed the forum, for example, theme, skin, whatever. I can't imagine being told to click on random sites, not knowing what to expect on the other side, and being asked to help.
Also, how often do you get frustrated by dumb questions?

honestly, I barely look at the design of the forum unless there is something REALLY spectacular that catches my eye. I like uniqueness more then anything. seeing the same cookie cutter site over and over just makes you start to blur your vision a bit. all these RP sites end up "needing" the same things the other sites have.. and I often wonder if they know WHY they need them.
such as static/scrolling/marquee affiliates. why do you need all three? do they mean something different to be in scrolling versus static? is your site less then another if you dont have scrolling affiliates? wordcount in the side table... hover links on the staff pictures... BAF... cbox in the side tables... a lot of cloning out there with just the colors and images changed.
but occasionally someone comes up with a unique idea and that gets my attention. when they stray from the norm and put something in that I dont see very much of is when I pay attention again.
as for questions, I only really get frustrated when they ask a question that has already been asked 3 times that day. in fact there could be a thread ON the first page of requests that asks the EXACT same question they are asking.. they just had to click it and see what the answer was... but they dont. they start a new thread as if they are the first people ever to want to put images in the backgrounds of side tables (if that was you, sorry to make you the example). there is a search button at the top that could easily have been used to look up "hover links". but it seems ppl get too lazy sometimes. its not always the case. sometimes they actually DO have something that requires a look at their board to see what the conflict is.. but making the attempt is better.
Im not perfect. I get stuck on things too. I have gone to Todge or Eton or (randie) with questions... but I can guarantee I spent at least a day researching it on google. perusing coding forums for examples of what I wanted to achieve. I think everyone should put forth SOME effort before making a request. just do a quick search of what you are looking for. it could very well be that SOMEONE has asked how to put side tables on a forum before.
and size 0/1 text. I hate it. you put your question in that and I already hate your question.
the trifecta for me is someone who uses size 1, bumps after 20 minutes, and asks how to get money on the profiles. makes me wanna eStrangle someone.

Noway! That wasn't me with the background question, I had the hover question, for my sidebar and for the record I spent days putting together my site, and that was the first time to use that code, my friend had suggested it to me, thought it would save space and make it look more clean. Which was true, however, messing up one of those little ' made everything throw off, or actually i missed about a dozen of those. But everything else i typically find out about myself, i research and i find. I don't pretend to be a good coder, but something about asking for help? my god, it's like twisting my arm around.
and I can honestly say that i was guilty of size=1ing my question, RPGer in me did it out of habit. My b. We do it to make our posts look clean, don't ask me, most sites have a rule saying that if you don't size=1 they will warn you for not making your post look neat.
I've always felt I've annoyed those that help, but I want everyone to know how grateful i am when you guy's give me help and so quickly as well.
as well as the scrolling, static, i don't know. I don't see the point in having so many different types. i think one all you need, and maybe a listed at, such as RPG directory and caution. you have a point on that.

I try to take care of the redundant questions on the support forum so Wormo can worry about real coding problems. And just as a question: Wormo, is there anything on my site that stands out? divisionsoftriad.proboards.com If not then what could I add that would make it really unique? |
